A.  Background of the Study

Language is one of the most important things in communication and it is used as a toll of communication among the nations in all over the world. As an  international  language,  English  is  very  important  and  has  many interrelationships  with  various  aspects  of  life  owned  by  human  being.  In Indonesia,  English  considered  as  the  first  foreign  language  and  taught formally from elementary school up to the university level. 

May be we do not speak English with our parent or our friends but we always  read  in  the  books,  magazine,  papers,  movies  and  etc.  every  day.  So learning English is very important to know far increasing our knowledge.  English  is  one  of  an  international  language  and  it  is  widely  used  and studied all over the world.

As people know that language is not only used in writing but also in speaking as a means of communication. This language used in many countries around the world. Besides that it is a means of international language. English language plays a very important role in every part of human international  relationships,  such  as  science,  technology,  culture,  health????

This  chapter  discusses  about background  of the  research,  research problems, objectives  of  the  research, research  hypothesis,  significance of  theresearch, scope and limitation of the research, definition of key terms.

A. Background of the Research

English is one of international languages which has an important role in  the  world.  In  Indonesia,  English  is a  foreign  language  that  is  taught  from elementary  school  to  University.  English  is  a  foreign  language  used  as  a medium of instruction at school, many students think that English is the most difficult subject.

The  goal  of  teaching  and  learning  English is to  produce  and comprehend  language that are  spoken  and  written.  Some  people  think  that  a successful  English  learner  is  a  person  who  can  speak  English  fluently.  They do not know that a person who is said a success English learners is a person who masters in all of English skills

There  are  four  skills  in  English,  they  are  speaking,  writing,  listening and reading. One of the language skills that has to be mastered by students in learning a foreign language is reading skill. It is very important in the process of  learning  because  reading  in  English  helps  the  students  learn  to  think  in????????

INTRODUCTION

A.   Background

English is one of the subjects in Indonesia’s curriculum for elementary until university level and also become a subject which is examined in National Examinations. Law of National Education Standard (2005) stated: In the level of Senior High School (SMA) or other forms in the same level, National Examination includes subjects of Indonesia Language, English, Mathematics, and the subjects which are become the characteristics of Education Program.

Besides as a compulsory subject, English is also a need in this globalization era. The goals of teaching English in Indonesia are mainly to enable the students to use English for communication and to read books and references written in English. The students are expected to have skills of the English language such as reading, writing, listening, speaking, and other elements of language that must be taught to the students through the chosen themes.

Among the four skills above, reading get greater attention than three others, because reading is one of the important skills. Reading can be defined as an active cognitive process of interacting with the print and monitoring comprehension to establish meaning and through reading we can get much knowledge, study new words, comprehend ideas, study the word are used, how to implement the grammatical rules, and gain the information from their reading material if they are able to derive meaning from what they read. By reading people can explore the world, find and improve new concept, enhance experience, find problem solving, and????????
