INTRODUCTION

This  chapter  presents  background  of  the  study,  research  problem,  the purpose  of  the  study,  the  significance  of  the  study,  scope  and  limitation  of  the study, hypothesis, definition of key term, and organization of the study.

A.    Background of the Study 

Language  is  important  for  human  life.  Every  country  has  different  nation language includes English that constitutes England nation language. As it is used by  a half of population  of people in the world,  English becomes  an international language.  English  is  a  tool  of  communication  among  people in  the  world. Moreover, having  English competence is important in facing  global competition. Therefore, students need to understand and use English as supplies to face global competition.

As an international language, English is commonly used by all countries in the  world.  Everyone  is  competing  to  master  English  as  a  communication  tool  in this  era  of  globalization.  Currently,  mastering  of  English  language  is  one  of  the factors  that  determines  the  success  in  studying,  career  or  business.  In  Indonesia, English is the first foreign language which has??????

Translation is a communication activity that involves language. People who do not have the same language can be connected by translation. Through translation they can understand any text that they read. Therefore, translation is important because it is a type of communication. Translation has been part of human life since long ago. However, there are often cases where translation contains errors and if there are errors in translation, the real message of the text is not communicated well. There could be misunderstanding because of error in translation.

According to Simatupang  (2000), “Translation is transferring the meaning of  source  language  into  the  target language and expressing it in the target language with the form which is proper based on valid rules in  the  target  language”  (p.  2).  So,  in  translation,  the  aim  is  to  transfer  the  meaning  of  source language in the form which is proper in the target language. The errors in translation could happen because the translator does not get the meaning of source language.

The writer found that translation was quite complicated. In translation, people did not simply render the meaning of the text word-per-word, people also need to consider the context of the text. They  need to  use  the  right  word  for the right  context  and  also  have  to  be????

INTRODUCTION

A.    Background

Nowadays, science and technology development demands people to increase their knowledge and experience. One way to increase their knowledge and experience is by reading. Reading is one-step to study effectively. Through this step, it can develop our memory, comprehension, and more knowledge for example when the people study textbook, article, short story, and even a novel. Reading can increase our science andgive us knowledge information. Reading is an activity with a purpose. Someone may read for many reasons, for instance to gain information and exiting knowledge, or in order to critique a writer’s ideas or writing style. 

Reading is one of the basic communicative skill,  but it has very complex process. It can be said that, reading is a process in which reader finds information given by the writer in the written form. In this case, reading can be said as an interactive process, checks, and ask questions about what the text is about. Leonard (1961) states that reading involves nothing more than correlating sound image, that is ”spelling” while Robert Karim (1980) defines that reading is as a???????
