POWER RELATION ESTABLISHED BETWEEN THE MAIN CHARACTERS OF DAWSON’S CREEK “DIRTY DANCING”

POWER RELATION ESTABLISHED BETWEEN THE MAIN CHARACTERS OF DAWSON’S CREEK “DIRTY DANCING”

                                                                 CHAPTER I
                                                            INTRODUCTION

1.1  The Background of the Study
Language use is a unique phenomenon. It is because language use in fact heavily depends on context of situation (Halliday,1985:9). It seems that language and situation are inseparable. There is no deterministic relationship, of course, except in highly ritualized situations. In certain games, ceremonies, and formal rituals, actual forms of words may be laid down  as part of the proceedings, but most everyday uses of language are much more flexible. Given a social situation such as a “traditional market” it is possible to predict a great deal about the content, functions, and style of language used there. Much of the language will be transactional,
concerned with buying and  selling. It is different from using language in mosques or churches in a kind of religious services as sermons and the likes. Face to face conversation in which participants involved may see
gestures of their counterparts, is different from a mediated conversation in which participants involved cannot see gestures and what the speakers are doing while conversing.
About context of situation, Halliday and Hasan (1985), clarify it and suggest that context of situation can be specified through the use of register variables. They fall under the heading of field, mode, and tenor. Field refers to what is going on, including activity focus which is the nature of social activity and object focus or subject matter. So, field specifies what is going on with reference????????????????????

CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS BETWEEN ENGLISH AND INDONESIAN BASIC SENTENCE PATTERNS

                                                          CHAPTER I
                                                      INTRODUCTION

The chapter consists of background of the study, reason for choosing the topic, limitation of the study, statement of the study, objective of the study, significances of the study and outline of the study.
1.1 Background of the Study
In Indonesia, English is the first foreign language. Consequently, English is not used as a means of  daily communication among people but is only utilized in very limited interaction, and is  only learned as a school
subject. We know that English plays important   in the globalization era, so that now English is learned by students from the first grade of elementary school to the third grade of senior high school. Even, English is also taught for children in playgroup.

For beginner, the four basic skills of English namely; listening, speaking, reading and writing, can not be separated. The skills should be developed thoroughly, even though the reinforcement is in writing skill. It is
predicated on the observation and experience of the writer that most beginners of English, may speak the language well, but are not able to write based on the sentence pattern or word order well without systematic training. This training nearly always needs to begin at the sentence level.??????

                                                                   CHAPTER I
                                                              INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study
As everybody knows, communication plays an important role in human life especially in this globalization era. Through communication, we make a social interaction system. In this case, the role of language as a medium of communication is certainly essential.  Language as a mean of communication among individuals, societies or nations will be used to express ideas, feelings and opinions. Moreover, as the  globalization era approaches, people throughout the world need to communicate with others to exchange information, to do business with another, to adsorb and develop science as well as to transfer technology. This phenomenon leads to the needs for an international language.

Translation will be very important thing to do if we get much information which is written in foreign language. Translation can open the information that early people knew nothing. Bell gives the definition of translation as the expression in another language (or target language) of what has been expressed in another, source language, preserving semantic and stylistic equivalences (1995:5). From the Bell’s definition about translation, we can conclude that the basic concept of translation is to find equivalents that preserve features of the original. But, still, we have to move to the further discussion about how a good translation should be. Actually, there are many definitions about translation. Reviewing from the definitions about translation, then, Tytler as cited by Bell, defines a good

                                                                           CHAPTER I
                                                                       INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study
The definition of literature was gleaned  from a variety of  conceptions given by  many authors. One of those authors is R. J. Rees (1973:1-2) who defines literature into two senses. The first one is a narrow sense, which means that literature is anything that is written such as timetable, catalogues, textbooks, travel brochures and so on. The second one is a broad sense, which means writing that expresses and communicates thoughts, feelings, and attitudes towards life.
Meanwhile, Francis Connolly, as quoted by Sunaryono Basuki Koesnasoebroto (1988:3) defines literature into literature of imagination and literature of knowledge. The literature of  imagination interprets experience by a fiction is a presentation of persons, ideas, and events. The author invents a life like image or story that embodies truths of human nature.  Whereas, the literature of knowledge interprets facts, ideas, or
happenings. It is based on the people’s need of factual information. The examples of  literature of imagination are drama, poem, and novel, while the examples of literature of knowledge are technical books and textbooks.
Rees (1973:9) added that literature may be good or bad, or indifferent but good literature will have some, if not all, of the following qualities: psychological truth or holding the mirror up to nature, originality, craftsmanship and a consciousness of moral values.///////////????

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1.  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Based on, Tyas E.E.A.:  Intelligence Emotional by Music: 2008, music is very familiar for human kinds even since  they are still inside their mother’s womb; babies have been introduced to the strains of music which have the shape of their mother’s heartbeats rhythm. In the earlier pregnancy, a baby is cannot really hear yet, but he is able to feel the vibration; his mother is heartbeats.
Director of International society for  Prenatal Learning and Bonding, Dr. Brent Logan realizes that mother is heartbeats  rhythm plays an important role to the fetus she’s carrying. He suggests making some variations to the heartbeat frequencies. That will stimulate the relations between neurons in the baby brain
and result in a better work intellectual. The research result has shown that in the 18th week of pregnancies, a baby will be hearing a sound from outside of his mother is body. Today, the mothers are not willing to underestimate again the positive influences to let their babies hear the music rhythm for their babies

growth in her uterus.
William Cole defined music as the process of how sound being formed in human brain to become music in his book The Form Of Music (1969:1):
“Music is a succession of sounds, simple or complex. The ears
hear the first sound and link it to the second. The first is still in the
memory as the second is followed by the third. This process continues
like a cinematograph of sound and there is an illusion of onward
movement. Memory enables the sounds to be compared, and it is

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1 General Background of the Study
People may use literature of satisfy their curiosity about others, their selves, or to convey their ideas related to human experiences. Literature  not only gives us a fantasy of enjoying reading, but also takes us to understand and to learn about life experiences. Life experiences bring one’s attitudes into the fact of human conditions, feelings, and relationship with other people.  Literature covers social aspect such us social relations, social experiences and social values.
For some people reading literature has become a part of their lives.
Certainly they have their own reason to read. Connolly (1955) says, as quoted by Koesnosubroto (1988:1) that:

People read literature because of hunger of information, or
amusement, or solace, or because of an appetite for truth that
seems to grow by what it feeds on. They read to discover
themselves and their world, to access their special roles on the
universe, to learn the meaning of the personal struggles in which
they are engaged. In other words, the want to share experiences.

By reading literature we can learn many experiences of human life because the material or the subject matter of literature is something very general such as man’s fate, or human life.  It can be said that literature is the basic expression of what people have witnessed in life, what people have experienced about life, what people have contemplated and felt about the aspects of life that attracted them directly and????????????

1. 1. Background of the Study
Talks  (conversation)  are  a  central  activity  in  social  life1.  That  is  why; studying or investigating conversation is not only interesting, but also meaningful. As  the  phenomenon  of  language  in  use,  conversation  is  studied  by  one  of  the branches  of  linguistics  that  is  discourse  analysis.  Language  is  the  medium  of conversation.
As the definition of language, it is a set of meaningful sound. People use  it  for  conversation.  In  the  development  of  language  and  conversation, sometimes language is a very complicated thing either in national or international language.  It  can  be  spoken  or  written  language.  Language  used  by  the  human being  expresses  the  idea,  feeling,  whishes,  opinion,  and  very  common  people debate their friends by language, although their reasons are false.

One of the phenomena that show studying language is interesting are each of people have common language and, the differences of how the language is used by the people in certain area. But we just observe the phenomenon physically. We never discuss or study it on the component of their language. We are never aware about it. Because of that, the researcher interested in studying about it, as Yule has pointed out in his book entitled ‘An Introduction to Language’ as below.???????????????????????????????????

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

This chapter discusses about background of study, previous study, scope of study, statements of problem, objective of  study, significance of study and outline of study. Below are more detailed descriptions:
1.1.  General Background of Study
Neo Colonialism is a term which is well known by people all over the world. Neo Colonialism itself is essentially a system of political, economic and cultural intervention and hegemony by a  powerful country in a weaker one (www.thefreedictionary.com) which happened after World War II.
From that quotation I tend to say that neo colonialism is used to refer to an ideology or a set of beliefs used to legitimize or promote this system and allow the colonialist were superior to those of the colonized.
A recent example of neo colonialism is the movement of Israel to Gaza which has allowed many critics to the colonist. Neo Colonialism includes two countries which have many differences. The conflict seems to
be the conflict between the representatives of western and eastern. In case of Israel is on the western side while Gaza is on the left one. The conflict between western and eastern country is widely known by whole
the world. The conflict which has covered all sides of life is also such a never???????    ??????   ??????

THE SPEECH ACT AND COMMUNICATION STRATEGY IN CHILDREN OF 3-5 YEARS OLD

THE SPEECH ACT AND COMMUNICATION STRATEGY IN CHILDREN OF 3-5 YEARS OLD

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A.  Background of the Study
In  order  to  communicate  with  others,  people  use  language.  They always share their ideas to the others. This also happens to the children under five  years  old.  They  use  their  first  language  to  communicate with  the  people around them.  In the age under five years old, the children have mastered at least 200-300 words. After getting their first language acquisition, they try to talk to the others.
However,  what  the  children  speak  or  utter  always  depends  on  what
they  needed  or  what  they  wanted.  In  the  other  words,  it  is  all  about  them, about their ego.  The  children  under  five  years  old  will  use  their  first  language acquisition to get the attention of the people around them. They try to utter in the way that they know.

In order to convey the children meaning or intention, they also show an act  in  their  speech.  This  is  called  as  a  speech  act.  Speech  act  is  the  things which  people  usually  do  while  they  are speaking.  Speech  acts  also  known  as the minimal unit of speaking. Besides  showing  the  act of  their  speech,  the  children  under  five  years old  also  use  strategy  in  their  speech.  The  following  is  the  example  of  the speech  of  the  children.  The  following  conversation  is  the  conversation???????     ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
